Communities That Care (CTC)
Since August 2016, the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment has been implementing the Communities That Care (CTC) prevention-planning system. This evidence-based program focuses on promoting positive youth development and preventing behaviors such as substance abuse and violence. By addressing root causes and involving community members, CTC aims to create a safer environment for our youth.
SoCoYoGo Program
As part of the CTC initiative, the SoCoYoGo program was developed to incentivize youth aged 13-18 to participate in positive activities. By engaging in prosocial opportunities, participants earn rewards redeemable at local businesses. This program not only encourages healthy behaviors but also strengthens the connection between our youth and the local economy.
Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority (PURA)
Established in 1959, the Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority (PURA) has been instrumental in revitalizing local neighborhoods. By redeveloping blighted areas and maintaining a strong urban core, PURA enhances local businesses, improves public infrastructure, and creates new housing opportunities. Their efforts contribute significantly to the economic health and aesthetic appeal of our city.
Colorado Smelter Revitalization Project (CSRP)
In response to environmental concerns, the Colorado Smelter Revitalization Project (CSRP) was formed to address contamination in the Bessemer, Eiler’s Heights/Bojon Town, and Grove neighborhoods. The project focuses on soil cleanups, community engagement, and the development of a revitalization plan to ensure the health and safety of residents while preserving the area’s cultural heritage.
Community Events and Engagement
Pueblo hosts a variety of events that foster community engagement and celebrate our rich culture. For instance, the annual Colorado State Fair and the Chile & Frijoles Festival are significant events that bring residents together. Additionally, initiatives like the ‘Rock the Message’ project, where residents paint stones with messages of hope and unity, showcase the creative ways our community comes together to inspire change.
